Supporting epistemic citizenship in psychological science
In this talk, I will give a brief overview of my forthcoming book “Good Science: Psychological Inquiry as Everyday Moral Practice” and then provide some more focused remarks on the role of epistemic citizenship in psychological science. In the book, I outline an epistemological and moral critique of the objectivist account of science and provide an alternative account that centers moral responsibility, collective commitment, and justice. In this alternative account, I argue for the importance of epistemic citizenship, or collective political work that challenges and transforms the disciplinary structures framing psychological knowledge. I will say a few words about epistemic citizenship and make the case that this requires much more, and much more broadly distributed and supported, expertise in science studies, historical, philosophical, and methodological scholarship in psychology.
