Interrogating our complicity in maintaining the status quo: Challenges for the discipline

How do we engage in meaningful participatory research? We know about the transformative potential of participatory models including creative, arts-based approaches. But their use does not automatically address the power imbalances inherent to research in any discipline. Before we can use transformative methodologies in effective and ethical ways, we have to interrogate our positionalities and what motivates us as researchers. We also have to question the systems and institutions that benefit us but not necessarily our research partners and co-researchers, who are often experts by experience.

I will share a couple of examples from my research to illustrate how we can unpack our complicity and work within institutional constrains to co-produce meaningful research outcomes.
